Game Summary

The Superbas are mired in their longest losing streak of the season after a heart-breaking 11-10 loss to N It 2 Win It on Wednesday, May 17. The Superbas entered the top-half of the seventh and final inning down by five runs, but rallied to bring the game within a single run, however eventually failing to tie the game even though the Superbas had the tying run on second and the possible go-ahead run on first with no outs.

The Superbas may have finally achieved parity up and down their lineup: the top five batters had nine hits and the bottom five batters had eight. Six players had multiple hits, including third baseman Jeff Wisniewski, shortstop Andrew Orr, designated hitter Jeff Adams, centerfielder Bill Mallchok, first baseman Wright Cole, and utility fielder Kevin Ghalambor. Ten different players scored and nine players registered at least one RBI.

Defensively, solid plays in the field were made by outfielders Jason Bariel, Craig Wright and Mallchok, and infielders Wisniewski and Orr. Pitcher Carlo Quinonez may have pitched his best game of the season, not allowing one walk. The Superbas allowed seven runs in the first two innings but held their opponents to only four runs the rest of the way, keeping a possible victory within reach.

The Superbas turned their first double-play of the season, a classic 4-6-3, in the bottom of the sixth inning. N It 2 Win It were threatening to pad their lead when second baseman Brooks Ramsdell played a hard grounder, threw to second base where Orr made the turn over to Cole at first.

Rightfielder Jesus Espinoza, once again, came off the bench to come through with a clutch single to lead off and start the rally in the last inning. A walk, five singles, and four runs later, the Superbas were down one with two men on and the 4-5-6 hitters coming to the plate. Three consecutive outs, however, halted the rally and sent the Superbas home with their second straight loss.

Orr struck out on foul balls in the seventh inning to account for the third strikeout of the season for the Superbas.

Website Overhaul (6/26/06)

The Superbas’ website has completed its overhaul and now includes individual player pages at superbas.org/players. The profiles of individual players still need to be completed and will be by season’s end. The Vice President of Operations and the two team captains will assist in gathering the information and photographs needed for the player profiles. An example of a quasi-completed player profile is here.

The website is broken down (for now) into 4 main sections:
– About: history, makeup, front office, coach, etc.;
– Players: player profiles, alltime roster, depth chart, etc.;
– Gamelogs: game summaries, box scores, links to game photos, etc.; and
– Blog: team news, gossip, rants, forum, comments, site updates, etc.

And, of course, the main page at www.superbas.org has information on the next game and the last game, batting leaders, etc.

Site Issues: New Server (12/18/06)

In lieu of the coming season, the organization has moved the website to new servers which will provide ample room for the anticipated growth of the team and fan-base. While the site is being loaded on the new servers, some temporary hiccups may pop-up here and there. If there are any persistent hiccups, please let the coach know.

Site Housecleaning (1/29/07)

Before the second season starts, some site housecleaning was necessary.

Some additions were logistical…
– Email the Coach is available at superbas.org/coach;
– An updated, detailed and thorough site index is available at superbas.org/index; and
– Players and fans can subscribe to blog updates at superbas.org/subscribe.

Another addition was for archival reasons… a full rundown of all the awards from last season.

The main page now includes a revolving banner that runs through all of the most recent blog entries.

And lastly, since a few players from the inaugural season will not be returning, the creation of an alltime roster was unfortunately needed.

Website (9/24/07)

Some people have noticed that Superbas.org is undergoing changes. Although there will be a few glitches along the way, as long as you subscribe to the blog, by way of email or rss reader, all the information will continue to be streamed to you.

The reason for the change — from a mixed-static site to a pseudo-dynamic one — will be realized in due time. It will establish an infrastructure for the website, which has long been needed and has, until now, only been sporadically maintained by me. Additionally, the new MovableType-powered blog will allow for guest contributors. (If you are interested in publishing your memoirs, as it pertains to softball, let me know.)

The first part of any website overhaul is the restructuring of existing data. At the same time, however, one must keep the current movement unfettered. That is the tough part. Up to last week, there had been 248 blog posts. All of those must be republished (a series of copy-and-pastes). And all other active web pages — the gamelogs, subscribe tool, email the coach, etc. — must be redone.

The second part — one that should be run concurrently with the first — is the redesign. In a perfect world, I would have time to do both. Alas, I do not. It is my intent to have the new website — fully republished with new site design — ready to go for the recruiting season for next summer. Target date: January 1, 2008.

Until then, it is a fucked up world. But it will be a more organized one.

Game Summary

The Superbas scored 6 of their 9 runs in the seventh inning to salvage a loss against the Dogg Pound on Wednesday, May 10. The Dogg Pound lead the entire game and headed into the final frame up 13 runs. However, the Superbas rallied, batted around with the help of seven hits, and narrowed the embarrassing gap to end the game 16-9.

Solid defense in the field by infielders Raphael Harper, Andrew Orr and Joe Gray, and outfielders Craig Wright, Jeff Wisniewski and Jesus Espinoza (who also pitched in relief), allowed the Superbas to continue playing the game by avoiding the dreaded “mercy rule.”

Offensively, the Superbas were highlighted by two hits apiece by third baseman Jeff Adams, Orr, Harper and Espinoza, and four hits by Wisniewski. Gray and starting pitcher Kevin Ghalambor both got their first hits of the season. Ghalambor struck out looking to end the fourth inning.

Game Summary

The Superbas franchise won their first game in a slugfest against the Beer Nutz, 18-16, on Wednesday, May 3. Third baseman Jeff Wisniewski hit a two-run homerun in the top of the sixth (and final) inning which turned out to be the deciding runs in a non-stop offensive showcase for the loyal Concord cougars/fans.

A new murderer’s row has been defined in the Superbas lineup: Wisniewski, shortstop Andrew Orr, first baseman Jeff Adams, and outfielder Jason Bariel combined for 14 hits, 10 runs, and 11 runs batted-in.

Leftfielder Craig Wright played well defensively and had two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Rightfielder Raphael Harper made key plays in the field and went 1 for 3 at the plate with 2 RBI. Centerfielder Bill Mallchok tripled and designated hitter Wright Cole doubled. Jesus Espinoza, off the bench, singled, batted-in a run, and scored.

Bariel hit the first homerun of the young season for the Superbas in the top of the first. The Superbas followed up their three-run first by batting around in the second, scoring 8 runs. The Beer Nutz staged a late-game comeback against pitcher Carlo Quinonez, however, solid defense held off the rally in a game the Superbas never trailed.

Grace Out 4-6 Weeks (5/1/06)

Centerfielder Eric Grace will be sidelined 4 to 6 weeks as a result of a broken left hand. Reports state Grace, hitting .400 through two games, broke his throwing hand trying to prevent a fight over the weekend. No word yet on whether the league will investigate.

When asked what the loss of the centerfielder (and “quarterback of the outfield”) means to the Superbas, Grace said, “It looks like our cheerleading section just increased by one-third.”

Superbas coach and general manager Jeff Wisniewski was approached and asked for comment. His reply, “Fairfield.”

Quinonez Out 2-3 Weeks (5/23/06)

Pitcher Carlo Quinonez will be sidelined 2 to 3 weeks after possibly fracturing his right foot. Reports state Quinonez, who is hitting .500 in four games, injured his right foot while wrestling during Bay to Breakers festivites in San Francisco over the weekend.

The Superbas play The Goonies on Wednesday, May 24, however have a bye the following week. Quinonez hopes he we will be ready to go the following game on Wednesday, June 7, where they face the Viper Squad who easily handled the Superbas in the first game of the season. Quinonez underwent X-rays and the scope of his injury will be known in a few days.

Superbas coach and general manager Jeff Wisniewski expressed concern for his player but remained optimistic about Quinonez’s return. “We hope for Carlo to be back on the mound in two weeks. Him getting healthy is most important and Carlo will let us know when he is ready.”

D-Grace Out For Season (5/24/07)

Utility fielder and heavy hitter Dyelan Grace will miss the rest of the season following surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon. D-Grace suffered the injury in the final inning of the game Tuesday evening.

D-Grace will be sorely missed. D-Grace has a 1.133 contribution percentage and .733 TRP, and leads the team in home runs and runs batted-in. D-Grace’s contributions in the field will also be missed.

D-Grace’s younger brother and teammate, Eric Grace, reprted the bad news to the coach of the Superbas via email: “Dyelan Grace has suffered a blown Achilles tendon. The prognosis is immediate surgery, 2 weeks in a hard cast, 6 weeks in a boot, and 6 months of rehabilitation.“

D-Grace had surgery at 9am on Thursday morning and will spend the next several months recovering.

In a related story, Coach Wisniewski was questioned by police following an altercation in downtown Berkeley. Upon hearing the news, the coach of the Superbas apparently threw his computer out of his ninth-floor office window, crushing the life of a bum on the street below. Files weren’t charged when it was discovered the vagrant hadn’t paid income taxes for the past twenty years. A vigil will be hosted at the next city council meeting in honor of the deceased bum.

“I cannot express what the loss of D-Grace means to this team,” Coach Wisniewski said. “D was a star on this team. His heart, his emotion and his excellent play, we cannot replace him.”

Gabe Hernandez Out For Season (7/16/07)

Not that it means much, but Gabe Hernandez will miss the rest of the season with an injury to his right hand, which he suffered during a fight outside a strip club on a recent trip to Vegas. The trip was even more special for Gabe since his mother tagged along.

The following is an email exchange…

Gabe: I’m proly gonna miss the last two games. On account of my hand injury on account of punchin someone in the face. Sorry Coach. Maybe next year. Good luck on the last two games.

Coach: You and your mom should stay clear of Vegas strip clubs.

Gabe: Hey man. Work hard, play hard. And nothin compliments strip clubs with a
fifty year old born again christian like a good ol fashion brawl. You cant
go to nevada and not smash a chair over someones back ya know.

And this came through the wires last Monday at our office (Gabe and I work together)…

Gabe has been having some intermittent intense pain in his right hand for the past week and he saw a doctor today who diagnosed it as a strained ligament. The doctor gave him a cortisone shot in the vicinity of the ligament strain and recommended he rest it for at least 24 hours.

Game Summary

The Red-Legged Superbas staged a late-game comeback to force a tie, 9-9, in the early game on Wednesday, April 26, 2006, against the highly-touted Los Diablos. Los Diablos (in full uniform, mind you) got ahead quick, scoring 7 runs in their first three times at-bat. Strong defense by the Superbas the rest of the way held Los Diablos to only 2 more runs.

Down by five runs in the bottom of the sixth, the Superbas batted eleven players, the first five of which scored to tie the game. The Superbas stranded 10 baserunners in total, including two in the final inning. With men on first and second and one out in the seventh, the Superbas failed to plate the winning run.

Jason Bariel recorded the first strikeout of the season.

Designated hitter Wright Cole, fighting through injury, accounted for six of the Superbas runs, going two for three with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. Third baseman Jeff Wisniewski and shortstop Andrew Orr had two hits apiece and scored three runs combined. In all, the Superbas had 12 hits, including a double by Brooks Ramsdell, a single and sacrifice fly by Eric Grace, and singles by Raphael Harper, Craig Wright and Carlo Quinonez.

Pitcher Quinonez shined once again on the mound. Rightfielder Harper made a dazzling catch along the right field line, impressing fans from all over Concord. Wisniewski, Jeff Adams, Ramsdell, Grace, Bariel and Craig Wright all made solid plays in the field.

Post-Game Interview: Eric Grace (4/26/06)

Following the first game (and loss) of the young season, centerfielder Eric Grace met with reporters…

Reporter: “Strong pitching tonight from the Viper Squad.”

Grace: “Yeah, the guy threw a good game. Even when my best hit, a solid line drive, was caught, well I just knew that luck was on his side.”

Reporter: “You had an error in the 3rd inning. Can you tell us what happened on that?”

Grace: “Yeah that was a tough one. It came in with some real heat, and with the thick grass and moist conditions, I was expecting it to slow once it came into contact with the ground. In actuality, it seemed to accelerate off the field. At least we we were able to get an out on the play; Wisniewski made a nice throw from third to get the runner at second. And we were able to get out of the inning.”

Game Summary

In a late-night heartbreaking game, the Red-Legged Superbas lost to the Viper Squad, 14-4, after six full innings on Wednesday, April 19, 2006. The Superbas franchise made its debut beneath the lights of the Concord Municipal main field in front of a large population of Concord cougars. (The Superbas’ opponents have had a long storied history in the league and were favored to win.)

The Superbas failed to piece together a series of hits that could have made the game manageable in the later innings. Stellar play in the field by second baseman Brooks Ramsdell highlighted the defensive side of the game and kept the Superbas in the hunt for a victory.

Ramsdell knocked in two runs on two sacrifice flies. Pitcher Carlo Quinonez struck out a Viper Squad power hitter and had three singles. First baseman Jeff Adams had a double and a triple, and scored two runs.
