2006 Summer Awards, Part 2

Continuing on…

Clutch Player: Jeff Adams
Jeff hit in 9 consecutive games, a franchise record, and is a fixture among the top four in almost every batting statistic category. Adams batted .529, had 2 triples, and recorded a .743 RLS (fourth-best on the team).

Surprise Player: Kevin Ghalambor
Kevin pitched his way into our hearts but Kevin also led the team in walks and was seventh on the team with a .467 RLS.

Biggest Disappointment: Jason Bariel, Bill Mallchok
This award, nicknamed the “Maximoo Award,” is the most difficult to hand out. But it has to be done (for parity sake). There were really four contenders — Grace with his injury, Bayham with his slump, Bariel with his loyalty complex, and Mallchok with his attendance issues. In order to make the decision… consult the stats. Only one player had fewer plate appearances than Jason’s 14 (Bill’s 13). Jason was the first player to strikeout this season after refusing to take batting practice. (And for that, I salute you…) On the upside, these two guys combined for an almost .600 batting average, a 2/3 on-base percentage, a 1.000 slugging percentage and a 1.000 RLS. On the downside, the two combined for a measly .370 TRP. Jason and Bill managed to only score 7 runs this season, one of which came on Jason’s home run (which, coincidentally, was the first ever in franchise history).

Rutherford B. Hayes Award For Excellence In The Field Of Unadulterated Support: Dom No. 24
First, a little background information on Mr. Hayes. Hayes was born and raised in the state of Ohio before becoming governor and was only one of four U.S. presidents to have won the Oval Office without winning the popular election. (J.Q. Adams, Benjamin Harrison and sitting-president G.W. Bush are the other three.) Hayes promised to only serve one term and that he did. Hayes was also the first sitting president to visit the west coast. But on to Dom. We had one true fan this season, and that was Dom No. 24. (I am unsure of Dom’s last name, so from now on, it is “Dom No. 24.”) Without Dom, would we have won the two games we did? (Hard to tell.)

Jeff, Kevin, Jason, Bill and Dom… we salute you.

2006 Summer Awards, Part 1

Well, here goes…

East Side Player of the Year: Raphael Harper
The east side is all about attitude, and Raphael exhibited a ton of it, highlighted by flashy catches in right field followed by T.O.-style celebrations.

West Side Player of the Year: Brooks Ramsdell
The west side is more subtle and graceful, and no one exemplifies these characteristics more than their captain. Brooks worked his way out of a mid-season slump to finish with a .581 RLS (fifth-best on the team) and was an anchor for the defense.

Comeback Player: Eric Grace
Only one comeback was made this year, so this was pretty much by default. But seriously, Eric came back after his Fairfield-style injury to garner 20 plate appearances (four other players had the same or less). Eric was only 1 plate appearance shy of the cutoff (despite missing more than half the season) and led the team in sacrifice hits.

Ironman: Joe Gray
Joe played in every game this season and was involved in several collisions at the plate. Joe worked hard following a pre-season injury to record the fourth-most plate appearances on the team.

Raphael, Brooks, Eric and Joe… we salute you.

2006 Summer Season Awards

What a year it was for the Superbas. A good start — one win, one loss, and one tie — and then it went downhill, and fast — five consecutive losses, a win, and then three more losses to finish strong. But the team had fun, and even avoided a mutiny here and there along the way. (Not bad for an inaugural season.)

Over the next few days, the end-of-season awards will be announced. Each recipient will receive a $100 Buy.com gift card (not really, but play along) available for the purchase of select fitness-related items.

On to the awards. There are eighteen awards (for a 15-man team and a 12-game season; yes, eighteen). The awards will be presented in clusters and in no particular order. If you have any issues with an award’s recipient, consult with your captain, and then go fuck yourself. Until tomorrow…

Superbas Game 012-20060719

Game Summary

The Superbas ended their inaugural season on a disappointing note as they were whipped by the seemingly-underaged The Goonies, 19-3, in the early game on Wednesday, July 19. The Superbas lost eight of their final nine games to finish the season 2-9-1.

The Superbas middle infield played well as shortstop Jeff Wisniewski and second baseman Brooks Ramsdell made several plays including turning a beautiful 4-6-3 double play, the defensive highlight of the game. The fans, including a number of cougars, cheered in delight.

First baseman Bill Mallchok came out of hiding and supplied the Superbas’ only extra-base hit, driving in 2 of the Superbas’ 3 runs. Mallchok, Wisniewski and outfielders Wright Cole and Eric Grace had 2 hits apiece. Ramsdell drew 2 walks and pitcher Kevin Ghalambor scored on a sacrifice fly by Wisniewski.

Catcher Joe Gray struck out swinging in the third.

In a sign of appreciation, the Superbas were nearly carried off the field after the game by the loyal fan base that had developed over this first season. The Superbas certainly gave a lot for their fans to cheer about; unfortunately, that didn’t equate to success in the win column.

Defensive Players of the Game: Jeff Wisniewski and Brooks Ramsdell.
Offensive Player of the Game: Bill Mallchok (2-4, 2B, 2 RBI).

Superbas Game 011-20060712

Game Summary

The Superbas suffered their most humiliating loss in franchise history, 30-4, against N It 2 Win It on Wednesday, July 12. The dry summer air hampered the defensive efforts of the Superbas as balls sailed past the outfielders and the “biggest assholes in the league” ran up the score.

Second baseman Brooks Ramsdell had two hits and a walk and scored three of the Superbas’ four runs. Third baseman Andy Orr had two hits and three runs batted-in. Shortstop Jeff Wisniewski had three hits and a run scored. Pitcher Carlo Quinonez hit a sacrifice fly. And that was pretty much it.

Defensively, the Superbas highlights came from their middle-infield combination of Wisniewski and Ramsdell and the two accounted for most of the Superbas’ defensive outs. In the last inning, Ramsdell moved to left field for defensive purposes and made another solid play on a deep fly ball. Catcher Joe Gray continues to hold his ground behind the plate as the game saw five plays at the plate, including several collisions; however, the fix was in, and the ump called all of the plays in the opponents’ favor.

First baseman Jeff Adams’ nine-game hitting streak came to an end. Gray struck out looking in the third.

The last game of the Superbas’ inaugural season is next Wednesday, July 19, in a rematch against the first-place The Goonies.

Defensive Players of the Game: Brooks Ramsdell and Jeff Wisniewski.
Offensive Players of the Game: Brooks Ramsdell (2-2, BB, 3 R), Jeff Wisniewski (3-3, 2B, R) and Andy Orr (2-3, 2B, 3 RBI).

Superbas Game 010-20060628

Game Summary

The Superbas squandered a 3-run lead in the final inning of a heart-breaking loss, 16-8, to the cocky Dogg Pound on Wednesday, June 28. The Superbas held a 8-5 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth when the Dogg Pound hitters continued to hit bloopers into no-man’s land.

Pitcher Carlo Quinonez continues to tear up opposing pitchers in the second half of the season by hitting 2 doubles, a triple and his first home run of the season. Quinonez scored four times and knocked in 3 runs. Over the past two games, Quinonez is 9 for 9 with 3 doubles and 3 triples, 7 runs and 9 RBI. Quinonez’s offensive statistics, accordingly, have gone through the roof. He leads all Superbas players with a .680 batting average, 1.160 slugging percentage and 1.138 contribution percentage.

Third baseman Andrew Orr and shortstop Jeff Wisniewski contributed with 3 hits apiece. Second baseman Brooks Ramsdell added two hits, convincing cougars and others that he is, indeed, out of his slump.

Outfielders Wright Cole and Ted Bayham provided spectacular defense in what was one of the best defensive games of the season for the Superbas. Through the first five innings, the Superbas held the vaunted Dogg Pound to only five runs, including a 1-2-3 inning in the first. Quinonez pitched well, Ramsdell played solid at second, and catcher Joe Gray held on to the ball during a wild collision at the plate on a throw home from right via cut-off man Ramsdell.

Gray struck out swinging for the first time this year.

Defensive Players of the Game: Wright Cole and Ted Bayham.
Offensive Player of the Game: Carlo Quinonez (4-4, 2 2B, 3B, HR, 4 R, 3 RBI).

Superbas Game 009-20060621

Game Summary

The Superbas snapped their 5-game losing streak after pummeling the Beer Nutz, 22-8, in the late game on Wednesday, June 21. The Superbas scored 14 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break open a tie game. Seven of the fourteen runs were scored with two outs. The Superbas had 30 hits in the game, 13 of which came in the final at-bat.

The top four hitters in the batting order, catcher Kevin Ghalambor, rightfielder Jesus Espinoza, third baseman Andrew Orr, and pitcher Carlo Quinonez, combined for 16 hits and 14 runs scored. Orr was a single shy of a cycle, including his first home run of the season, batting in 5 runs. Quinonez went 5 for 5 with a pair of triples and a double, and knocked in 6 runs.

The Superbas played their best game of the season defensively behind Quinonez’s stellar pitching and three strikeouts. The eight runs scored against the Superbas was the lowest number of runs the Superbas have allowed all season.

The Superbas held their errors to a minimum and routinely hit their cutoff men which didn’t allow Beer Nutz’ hitters to extend singles into doubles. Leftfielder Wright Cole made several plays on long fly balls and Orr played his best defensive game of the season.

Centerfielder Eric Grace returned to the lineup from injury and played solid in centerfield and went 3 for 3 with 3 RBI at the plate. Outfielder Ted Bayham and second baseman Brooks Ramsdell both broke out their season-long slumps with two hits apiece.

Espinoza struck out looking for the second time this season.

Defensive Players of the Game: Carlo Quinonez, Wright Cole and Andrew Orr.
Offensive Players of the Game: Kevin Ghalambor (5-5, 4 R, RBI), Jesus Espinoza (3-5, 3 R, 2 RBI), Andrew Orr (3-4, HR, 3B, 2B, 4 R, 5 RBI) and Carlo Quinonez (5-5, 2 3B, 2B, 3 R, 6 RBI).

Superbas Game 008-20060614

Game Summary

The Superbas’ struggles continue as they were dealt their fifth consecutive loss at the hands of the pitiful Los Diablos, 15-10, in the early game on the main field on Wednesday, May 14. A weak defensive second inning by the Superbas, where Los Diablos scored 10 of their runs, was all that was needed to secure victory.

Highlights were made in the field by outfielders Andrew Orr and Jesus Espinoza. Brooks Ramsdell played solid in the outfield and at second base.

The Superbas scored three runs in each of the first three innings but failed to rally late in a time-shortened game. Orr reached base three times and scored 2 runs, shortstop Jeff Wisniewski had two doubles and scored three runs, and first baseman Wright Cole knocked in 4 runs on two singles. Pitcher Kevin Ghalambor and catcher Joe Gray each drew 2 walks.

Following the game Coach Wisniewski announced two team captains: Ramsdell will head the west side and Orr will head the east side. The captains have suggested changes to the lineup and batting order, and the coach confirmed that those changes will be reflected in the coming weeks.

Ramsdell failed to get out of his slump and his batting average fell to .143 on the season. Cole struck out swinging in his first at-bat.

The next game will be a rematch against the only team the Superbas have beat, the Beer Nutz, in the late game on Wednesday, June 21.

Defensive Players of the Game: Jesus Espinoza and Brooks Ramsdell.
Offensive Players of the Game: Jeff Wisniewski (3-4, 2 2B, 3 R, RBI) and Wright Cole (2-4, R, 4 RBI).
