Jeffrey Wisniewski (3/27/2008 12:28:32 PM): my server connection is sluggish
Bruce Valles (IT) (3/27/2008 12:28:57 PM): Yeah we have some heavy network use right now, I’m trying to track it down. Are you here in Sac or in another office?
Jeffrey Wisniewski (3/27/2008 12:29:16 PM): i am in OAK
Bruce Valles (IT) (3/27/2008 12:30:02 PM): I’ll shoot you a message if I find the problem and clear it up. It’s probably someone either downloading files or something from the internet, checking our network devices now
Jeffrey Wisniewski (3/27/2008 12:30:21 PM): okay
———————————————–
Jeffrey Wisniewski (4/1/2008 2:16:16 PM): hey bruce
Bruce Valles (IT) (4/1/2008 2:16:17 PM): Call me on cell.
———————————————–
Bruce Valles (IT) (4/1/2008 3:11:40 PM): Hi Jeff, I just got back, it looks like GeoSlope is a floating license so I can install the software on Lacy’s laptop. I have to complete a few things but I’ll come down in a few minutes to run the installation.
Jeffrey Wisniewski (4/1/2008 3:11:51 PM): great
———————————————–
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/9/2008 10:41:37 AM): hey bruce, the server is very sluggish in oakland
Bruce Valles (IT) (5/9/2008 10:41:56 AM): Ok, I’ll remote in and take a look
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/9/2008 10:42:01 AM): im having a hard time accessing Sac server
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/9/2008 10:42:15 AM): okay, thank you
Bruce Valles (IT) (5/9/2008 10:50:36 AM): Jeff, so far I’m not seeing any problems on either end, both servers and networks look like they have normal useage, can you test internet to see if you have problems with other network resources, you may have a patch coming down that is causing your slowdown as well.
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/9/2008 10:51:04 AM): what is a patch?
Bruce Valles (IT) (5/9/2008 10:51:25 AM): Updates for windows or other programs you may have installed that use background patching services
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/9/2008 10:51:45 AM): google works fine
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/9/2008 10:51:56 AM): i keep getting “that directory does not exist
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/9/2008 10:52:06 AM): when i use server
Bruce Valles (IT) (5/9/2008 10:52:23 AM): what location are you accessing on the sac server, I’ll test it locally
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/9/2008 10:52:28 AM): i need to refresh
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/9/2008 10:52:47 AM): it is taking me several mins to connect to Sac server
Bruce Valles (IT) (5/9/2008 10:52:56 AM): which directory?
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/9/2008 10:53:07 AM): DWR/General Project
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/9/2008 10:53:24 AM): now it has connected
Bruce Valles (IT) (5/9/2008 10:54:10 AM): ok speeds just jumped up between sites, I’ll keep checking, looks like a network issue on at&t’s side
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/9/2008 10:54:24 AM): yea, it is quicker now
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/9/2008 10:54:31 AM): thank you
Bruce Valles (IT) (5/9/2008 10:54:50 AM): no problem, I’ll keep a trace running to see if it happens again and call att if it comes back
———————————————–
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/28/2008 11:46:55 AM): hey bruce
Bruce Valles (IT) (5/28/2008 11:47:08 AM): Hi Jeff
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/28/2008 11:47:17 AM): i had a request
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/28/2008 11:47:32 AM): i was hoping to get a usb hub for my laptop
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/28/2008 11:47:39 AM): i’ve run out of ports
Bruce Valles (IT) (5/28/2008 11:48:50 AM): Sure no problem, are you in Sac or in Oakland this week? I’m visiting Oakland tomorrow and can bring one with me.
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/28/2008 11:49:26 AM): great. i am in OAK, but will be in SAC tomorrow. could you leave it in my “office” on the 2nd floor, maybe in the drawer.
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/28/2008 11:49:33 AM): how many ports does it provide?
Bruce Valles (IT) (5/28/2008 11:50:19 AM): Usually they have 4 ports but we can get one with more if needed. Will you travel with it or leave it at your desk?
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/28/2008 11:51:37 AM): I think the four plus two (the other ports on my laptop) is adequate, and I’d probably like to travel with it.
Bruce Valles (IT) (5/28/2008 11:52:49 AM): Ok, I’ll find something that will work best and either bring it with me or have it ordered and shipped to you this week. I’ll message you a link with the model before hand to double check.
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/28/2008 11:53:21 AM): great
Jeffrey Wisniewski (5/28/2008 11:53:25 AM): thank you

Bruce Valles (IT) (6/20/2008 9:11:11 AM): Hi Jeff
Jeffrey Wisniewski (6/20/2008 9:11:22 AM): my connection sucks
Jeffrey Wisniewski (6/20/2008 9:11:27 AM): pardon my language
Jeffrey Wisniewski (6/20/2008 9:11:36 AM): took me 5 mins to download 28mb file off server
Bruce Valles (IT) (6/20/2008 9:11:38 AM): what office are you in, oakland or Sac?
Jeffrey Wisniewski (6/20/2008 9:11:40 AM): OAK
Bruce Valles (IT) (6/20/2008 9:11:49 AM): which server the oak serv?
Jeffrey Wisniewski (6/20/2008 9:11:56 AM): SAC
Bruce Valles (IT) (6/20/2008 9:12:05 AM): let me check the line conditions, one minute
———————————————–
Bruce Valles (IT) (6/20/2008 9:29:22 AM): Hi Jeff, sorry for the delay, it looks like a few users here are using some of the pipeline, it may ease up in a bit. I’ll monitor it and see if I can get a few to change their download/upload times for files.
Jeffrey Wisniewski (6/20/2008 9:29:50 AM): pipeline?
Bruce Valles (IT) (6/20/2008 9:29:55 AM): I’ll also note the problem and bring it up as the IT dept talks about network upgrades for the next year, this is going to be an ongoing problem
Bruce Valles (IT) (6/20/2008 9:30:04 AM): the network connections between the offices
Jeffrey Wisniewski (6/20/2008 9:30:08 AM): oh
Jeffrey Wisniewski (6/20/2008 9:30:18 AM): and me moving a file from SAC isn’t helping
Jeffrey Wisniewski (6/20/2008 9:30:25 AM): either
Bruce Valles (IT) (6/20/2008 9:31:07 AM): you should be able to do that though, our lines are just not fast enough for the amount of users and data we are sending, but hopefully soon we’ll have some upgrades to the network to speed things up
Jeffrey Wisniewski (6/20/2008 9:32:23 AM): coo
Jeffrey Wisniewski (6/20/2008 9:32:25 AM): cool
Jeffrey Wisniewski (6/20/2008 9:32:28 AM): thank you
———————————————–
Bruce Valles (IT) (6/20/2008 9:33:11 AM): no problem, also FYI, looks like someone in Ontario is also pulling a file off the sac server, that will slow you both down for a bit
———————————————–
Jeffrey Wisniewski (6/23/2008 4:47:15 PM): having trouble logging in to Novell…

Bruce Valles (IT) (6/23/2008 4:48:12 PM): that’s odd, but I’ve noticed some slow logins today, can you try a restart of your computer and see how it goes after that. I’m going to check the network room to see if there’s a problem on the switch
Jeffrey Wisniewski (6/23/2008 4:48:22 PM): okay

Jeffrey Wisniewski (6/23/2008 5:01:16 PM): thank you
Bruce Valles (IT) (6/23/2008 5:01:36 PM): ok good, the network optomizer was causing the problem, we turned it off for now until it’s repaired.

Jeffrey Wisniewski (7/29/2008 9:45:17 AM): internet is sloooow
Bruce Valles (IT) (7/29/2008 9:45:37 AM): yeah I’m just checking on it now, looks pretty bad, give me a few minutes and I’ll see if we can make some adjustments

Jeffrey Wisniewski (9/23/2008 3:07:52 PM): hey bruce
Bruce Valles (IT) (9/23/2008 3:08:01 PM): Hi Jeff

———————————————–
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/2/2008 4:48:23 PM): why does GroupWise messenger act-up so often?
Bruce Valles (IT) (10/2/2008 4:48:39 PM): are you working wireless?
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/2/2008 4:48:42 PM): no
Bruce Valles (IT) (10/2/2008 4:48:52 PM): it may drop a lot on wireless connections… or are you seeing people log on and off?
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/2/2008 4:48:55 PM): it keeps giving me errors if i create folders
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/2/2008 4:49:05 PM): or drag contacts to different folders
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/2/2008 4:49:26 PM): error code 0xd10e
Bruce Valles (IT) (10/2/2008 4:49:29 PM): oh, yeah I’ve seen that, you may need to reinstall it over the top of itself, it’s a quirky program, let me check if the installer is on your server
Bruce Valles (IT) (10/2/2008 4:54:30 PM): I’m copying over a new version of the messenger client, I’ll let you know when it’s on your server and you can do a reinstall to see if it fixes up the problem, you should be able to install it over the existing version.
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/2/2008 4:54:53 PM): okay
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/2/2008 4:54:55 PM): thank you
———————————————–
Bruce Valles (IT) (10/2/2008 5:00:11 PM): Jeff the install is available now, on your server APPS drive (Q) in the groupwise messenger folder. Run the Setup.exe file and choose the defaults.
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/2/2008 5:00:54 PM): great
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/2/2008 5:02:14 PM): My Apps drive is N
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/2/2008 5:02:29 PM): for OAK
Bruce Valles (IT) (10/2/2008 5:02:31 PM): ah ok, lol… we need to get the offices in sync for that
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/2/2008 5:02:52 PM): is that the same Setuo.exe though?
Bruce Valles (IT) (10/2/2008 5:02:58 PM): yeah
———————————————–
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/2/2008 5:05:03 PM): it looks like it is working better
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/2/2008 5:05:06 PM): thank you
———————————————–
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/9/2008 3:30:00 PM): server is slow
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/9/2008 3:30:18 PM): trying to right-click a file — minute or two delay response
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/9/2008 3:30:27 PM): in OAK, working on SAC
Bruce Valles (10/9/2008 3:30:43 PM): yeah we have some users here downloading their email files so it’s slowing all traffic down
———————————————–
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/9/2008 3:36:38 PM): i might as well go home
———————————————–
Bruce Valles (10/9/2008 3:37:54 PM): it’s a little slow right now, might be throughout the day but should clear up by tomorrow as the downloads completed
Bruce Valles (10/9/2008 3:37:57 PM): complete*
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/9/2008 3:38:46 PM): ok
———————————————–
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/10/2008 12:02:04 PM): not much better today
Bruce Valles (10/10/2008 12:02:30 PM): yeah unfortunately another user is replicating their mail file today so that’s causing the same slowdown, sorry
Bruce Valles (10/10/2008 12:02:49 PM): we’re in talks with our lawyers to expedite our network change/contract change to a new carrier
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/10/2008 12:03:05 PM): thats good
———————————————–
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 9:53:45 AM): hey bruce
Bruce Valles (10/20/2008 9:53:57 AM): Hi Jeff
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 9:54:40 AM): i think that all of my wireless issues are machine based
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 9:54:45 AM): for example
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 9:54:55 AM): i cannot even see any wireless connections available
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 9:55:02 AM): at home, or even at work
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 9:55:13 AM): when there were a handful of two “available” before
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 9:55:18 AM): (a few months ago)
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 9:55:47 AM): and each time i start up my computer, the wireless card is switched to “Off”
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 9:56:06 AM): and even after i turn it on, i still see no available networks
Bruce Valles (10/20/2008 9:58:22 AM): are you in Oak or Sac today?
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 9:58:55 AM): Sac
Bruce Valles (10/20/2008 9:59:29 AM): ok let me stop by later on and I’ll take a look, might be time to move you onto a new laptop but I’ll talk options with you, new models are coming out soon you may want to wait for
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 10:04:50 AM): oh wait, I am in OAK today
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 10:04:57 AM): that was a reflex response
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 10:05:02 AM): (not a good sign)
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 10:05:14 AM): i will be in Sac tomorrow
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 10:05:20 AM): we can talk then
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 10:05:23 AM): ?
Bruce Valles (10/20/2008 10:07:30 AM): ah ok sounds good
Bruce Valles (10/20/2008 10:08:06 AM): just call or send a message when you have time tomorrow and I’ll check some things on your laptop but I think you are due for an upgrade, I’ll get info on the new model
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 10:09:14 AM): great
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 10:09:17 AM): thanks a lot
———————————————–
Bruce Valles (10/20/2008 10:09:29 AM): no prob
———————————————–
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 11:35:25 AM): hey bruce, random question
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 11:35:40 AM): do you have any recommendations on cable modems?
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 11:35:50 AM): Motorola, Linksys, Netgera
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 11:35:55 AM): *Netgear
Bruce Valles (10/20/2008 11:36:11 AM): I’ve used comcast for the past 7 years and the motorola modem has been the best for me
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 11:36:26 AM): Surfboard 5100
Bruce Valles (10/20/2008 11:36:34 AM): the others are fine as well, but comcast seems to be using the motorola brand lately
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 11:36:49 AM): i think Comcast requires the pre-purchase of one
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 11:36:57 AM): (in lieu of renting it for $3/month)
Bruce Valles (10/20/2008 11:37:05 AM): ah yeah
Bruce Valles (10/20/2008 11:37:10 AM): yeah that’s the model I have from them now
Bruce Valles (10/20/2008 11:37:18 AM): it works really well for me
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 11:37:25 AM): cool; thanks
Bruce Valles (10/20/2008 11:37:36 AM): no problem
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 11:48:05 AM): i just called comcast, and they said that they would install the lynisys c100 for the $3/month fee. i would rather buy one then pay $3/mo. for the rest of my life. would you recommend the Motorola over the Linksys?
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/20/2008 11:48:31 AM): Does it matter (or would it work any better) if i have a linksys wireless router?
———————————————–
Bruce Valles (10/20/2008 12:23:50 PM): sorry was away. Linksys is a good brand. The good thing about dealing with their modem is that if it goes bad, you can just swap it at one of their offices for a new one. If you use yours they will always try to hassle you about it for support or you will have to buy another one down the road to replace it if you have a hardware failure.
———————————————–
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/21/2008 2:19:37 PM): hey, are you available?
———————————————–
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/21/2008 2:43:41 PM): … to take a look at my weird wireless settings situation?
Bruce Valles (10/21/2008 2:45:12 PM): Hi Jeff, sorry just got back to desk, give me a couple minutes and I’ll stop by to take a look
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/21/2008 2:45:55 PM): ok, i can bring my laptop up
Bruce Valles (10/21/2008 2:46:11 PM): I’ll stop by so I can do some reboots and test easier
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/21/2008 2:46:18 PM): ok
———————————————–
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/23/2008 3:40:43 PM): is network slow today?
Bruce Valles (10/23/2008 3:40:56 PM): it was earlier, can be hit or miss
Bruce Valles (10/23/2008 3:41:02 PM): let me check though
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/23/2008 3:41:25 PM): having slow reaction
Bruce Valles (10/23/2008 3:41:42 PM): what site are you going to?
Bruce Valles (10/23/2008 3:41:53 PM): looks like someone is downloading a file from an ftp server
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/23/2008 3:42:00 PM): ok
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/23/2008 3:42:07 PM): this has been all afternoon
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/23/2008 3:42:16 PM): just opening small XLS on server
Bruce Valles (10/23/2008 3:42:34 PM): ah that should be faster, are they Oakland server files or Sacramento?
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/23/2008 3:42:44 PM): Sac
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/23/2008 3:43:00 PM): thirty seconds to open 47kb spreadsheet
Bruce Valles (10/23/2008 3:43:12 PM): your on 2nd floor today yeah?
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/23/2008 3:43:17 PM): yes
Bruce Valles (10/23/2008 3:43:25 PM): ok let me check servers, one sec
Bruce Valles (10/23/2008 3:47:15 PM): can you check the speed now Jeff
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/23/2008 3:49:37 PM): slow
Bruce Valles (10/23/2008 3:49:42 PM): ok
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/23/2008 4:08:07 PM): its weird, navigating folders is quick, but opening spreadsheets is slow; opeing PDF was no problem
Bruce Valles (10/23/2008 4:16:49 PM): Jeff so far the server looks ok, where the file located you are having problems with, I can test open it on my machine
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/23/2008 4:17:59 PM): maybe i need to restart
Bruce Valles (10/23/2008 4:18:21 PM): yeah you can try that and see how the file opens after logging back in
———————————————–
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/23/2008 4:21:15 PM): can you open up these spreadsheets…
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/23/2008 4:21:18 PM): \\\172.21.201.4\data\WR\DWR\Project\URS-Geo Lev Invst\064590 TO26 Marysville Phase 2&3\GER Analysis\1292+09\Seepage
Bruce Valles (10/23/2008 4:21:57 PM): one sec
Bruce Valles (10/23/2008 4:24:17 PM): I’m able to open them ok
Bruce Valles (10/23/2008 4:24:31 PM): you might be having problems with the network and authentication, one sec
Bruce Valles (10/23/2008 4:27:05 PM): You access that shortcut through network places?
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/23/2008 4:27:31 PM): what do you mean?
Bruce Valles (10/23/2008 4:28:05 PM): where are you clicking to access the sacramento server? is it a shortcut in network neighborhood or a mapped drive in my computer?
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/23/2008 4:28:53 PM): i am not sure
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/23/2008 4:29:05 PM): I have folders saved in my Favorites in Explorer
Bruce Valles (10/23/2008 4:29:11 PM): ok
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/23/2008 4:29:17 PM): in Metwork Places, I see Sac folders
Bruce Valles (10/23/2008 4:29:23 PM): ok
———————————————–
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/31/2008 8:56:11 AM): hey, i’m in Sac, and the server response is slow
Bruce Valles (10/31/2008 8:56:27 AM): to the sacramento server?
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/31/2008 8:56:45 AM): yea
Bruce Valles (10/31/2008 8:57:20 AM): ok let me take a look, so far things are opening ok for me but could be a problem on the connection to 2nd floor
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/31/2008 9:04:25 AM): no one else down here seems to think it is slow
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/31/2008 9:04:37 AM): i’m having thirty second response to Excel Spreadsheets
Bruce Valles (10/31/2008 9:04:51 AM): you may have some overhead due to your oakland server connection, try restarting your laptop and see if this clears it up
Bruce Valles (10/31/2008 9:05:04 AM): it’s probably doing background connections to the oakland server
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/31/2008 9:05:17 AM): ok
———————————————–
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/31/2008 9:19:28 AM): much, much faster
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/31/2008 9:19:32 AM): thank you
Bruce Valles (10/31/2008 9:19:57 AM): that’s good, there’s some bad network setups with novell that we will get rid of when we move to the windows network over the next 9 months
Bruce Valles (10/31/2008 9:20:12 AM): sacramento and oakland will be early on the list
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/31/2008 9:20:38 AM): it sucks to have to shut down when you get so much up-and-going
Bruce Valles (10/31/2008 9:21:13 AM): yeah this novell network is out of date and isn’t performing very well with our newer tech
———————————————–
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/31/2008 3:48:53 PM): what is the difference between a router and a switch?
Bruce Valles (10/31/2008 3:52:41 PM): a router acts as a gateway for several machines behind it, routing traffic and requests, it also acts like a switch behind it’s firewall
Bruce Valles (10/31/2008 3:53:04 PM): a switch is just a device that allows direct connected computers to talk to each other, it won’t route traffic to the internet or back
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/31/2008 3:54:32 PM): do ethernet splitters reduce bandwidth?
Bruce Valles (10/31/2008 3:54:50 PM): sounds like they just allow you to share a connection
Jeffrey Wisniewski (10/31/2008 3:56:06 PM): thank you
Bruce Valles (10/31/2008 3:56:13 PM): no problem
———————————————–
Jeffrey Wisniewski (11/4/2008 2:22:46 PM): hey bruce, is there a knot in the internet connection?
Bruce Valles (11/4/2008 2:23:13 PM): it’s really slow right now, but looks like it’s outside our line’s, probably because of the election coverage
Jeffrey Wisniewski (11/4/2008 2:23:21 PM): oh wow
Jeffrey Wisniewski (11/4/2008 2:23:29 PM): too much high-def streaming
Bruce Valles (11/4/2008 2:23:49 PM): yeah lots of sites are having a hard time
Jeffrey Wisniewski (11/4/2008 2:24:36 PM): oh btw, if you ever see me log-in or off Groupwise Messenger, it is becase “Server Is Not Responding”
Jeffrey Wisniewski (11/4/2008 2:24:43 PM): I thas been happening twice a day
Jeffrey Wisniewski (11/4/2008 2:24:54 PM): *it has
Bruce Valles (11/4/2008 2:25:00 PM): is it at a certain time or different each time?
Jeffrey Wisniewski (11/4/2008 2:25:18 PM): no, randomly
Jeffrey Wisniewski (11/4/2008 2:25:25 PM): or seemingly so
———————————————–
Bruce Valles (11/4/2008 2:27:30 PM): ok thanks, I’ll mention it to the rest of the IT dept and we’ll check on the server side
Jeffrey Wisniewski (11/4/2008 2:27:39 PM): thank you
———————————————–
Jeffrey Wisniewski (11/12/2008 10:06:18 AM): hey bruce

Jeffrey Wisniewski (11/12/2008 10:07:48 AM): no, OAK
Bruce Valles (11/12/2008 10:08:08 AM): Ok, I’ll be in Oakland on Friday. I have a small portable HD, 160 GB I will bring for you
