Acid Rain Legislation Letter

The Honorable Charles Schumer
The Honorable Hillary Rodham Clinton
United States Senate
Washington, D.C. 20510

June 4, 2001

Dear Senator:

I am writing to you to express my concern on acid rain in New York State. I currently study engineering at Syracuse University, and have studied the effects of acid rain in Central New York. I realize that any haste in remediation of this horrific industrial crime will further continue the destruction of our precious environment, including our ever-decreasing water supply.

I am asking, and pleading, for you to take the lead in fixing the acid rain problem. We must not allow the illegitimate president we now have (a travesty in itself, but life goes on) to push through irrational energy policy without fully alleviating this crucial problem.

I have read and studied the Acid Rain Control Act and fully believe that the proposal is reasonable, cost effective, and achievable. This is necessary legislation that New York State is dependent upon for a brighter and cleaner future.

As a future engineer, or environmental lawyer, and especially as an environmentalist, I am fully aware of the damage that results from acid rain. This damage must, and can be stopped, if we work for it now. We must also support the efforts of environmental lawyers, such as Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who attempt and successfully prosecute the source of this environmental conflict – big industry. The failures of big industry and energy, to utilize cleaner, more efficient methods, continue to intensify the acid rain problem.

Please take the lead on this very important issue for myself and many other New Yorkers, and good luck. This will be a hard fight in a tight Senate and House, but the better ideas will always prevail.

I would greatly appreciate any response from you on your feelings, thoughts, ideas, and position on this crucial issue.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey B. Wisniewski
